Porcelain or ceramic? The simple difference for floors and bathrooms in Libya

Porcelain is harder and absorbs less water, so it is the better pick for floors, bathrooms and outdoors; ordinary ceramic is fine for indoor walls.

The short answer

If you are asking porcelain or ceramic: use porcelain for floors, bathrooms and outdoor areas, and ordinary ceramic is enough for indoor walls. Both are fired clay, but porcelain is fired hotter, so it comes out denser and harder.

What is the real difference?

The main difference is water absorption. Porcelain absorbs very little water (under 0.5% by the standard), so moisture and stains do not sink in easily. Ordinary ceramic is more porous, lighter and easier to cut, but weaker against knocks and constant damp.

For floors: porcelain

Everyone walks on a floor, chairs get dragged across it and it is washed every day. Porcelain is the safe choice because it handles scratching and heavy foot traffic better than ordinary ceramic. In the living room, entrance and kitchen, do not hesitate.

For bathrooms and outdoors: porcelain too

A bathroom has water all day, and a garden or terrace has sun, rain and heat. Low water absorption is why porcelain is chosen for these places. Just watch the surface: for wet and outdoor floors, ask for a slip-resistant finish.

And walls? Ceramic is usually enough

A wall is not walked on and carries no load, so ordinary ceramic does the job in indoor rooms. If you want the same tile on floor and wall so the space looks continuous, porcelain works for both.
